The Elms Junior Middle School
We are a school of 420 students in the Rexdale area of Toronto designated as high needs and as a Model School for Inner Cities, based on the Toronto District School Board's LOI (Learning Opportunities Index). Many of our students are newcomers to Canada, with 25% of households speaking non-official languages at home (according to the last census). The top 5 languages spoken in our school are Spanish, Somali, Italian and Tagalog.
Our students lack access to reading materials at home. Many of their parents are essential workers on full-time hours, making it very challenging for them to access public libraries and their resources. With multiple children at home and parents struggling to support learning, our students have been greatly affected by the pandemic. Parents have indicated that they find it very challenging supporting student online learning when they are having to manage so many children learning online at once or are unable to speak English enough to understand instructions.
We would like to increase texts that are relevant to students' lived experiences, representative of their interests, focused on social justice and global citizenship. We would like to update and improve non-fiction resources. Our Canadian content and dual-language text selection also needs to be supplemented. We would love to have more opportunities to add student published texts to our Library. We feel it is also extremely important to promote our library as a community hub (for parents and community members).
