St. Theresa Shrine Catholic School is a small but vibrant school in the heart of Scarborough. Our school spirit is visible in everything we do, whether it is clubs, sports, activities, or, of course, our love of reading. Unfortunately, our school library faces significant challenges that hinder our ability to support our students' literacy needs and foster an even deeper love of reading. Our book collection is outdated, with most titles being over 15-20 years old, and it lacks the diversity and representation that would best reflect our student body. Our non-fiction books are also severely outdated, which limits our ability to support the curriculum and stimulate student interest across various subjects such as STEM, environmental issues, animal sciences, and biographies. A considerable portion of our students come from non-English speaking backgrounds, with many being newcomers to Canada. Having books in our library that reflect their cultures and lived experiences would engage them in a better way. We hope to rejuvenate our library with current, diverse, and inclusive books that will better serve our whole student population with the support of the Adopt-A-School program.
