Regina Street Alternative School

Regina Street Alternative is a school like no other, bordering Mud Lake in beautiful Ottawa, Ontario. Our kindergarten to grade 6 school is alive with unique exploration of literacy both in nature and within the walls of our school. While our outdoor learning is constantly changing and evolving with the seasons change, our library has stayed squarely in the past with over 10,000 books and only 10% of those being published in the last ten years. As a proud Alternative school, our diverse needs are not being met when considering the maturity levels, backgrounds, and reading ability of our students. Many older students flock to popular graphic novels which have been donated to our library. Dog Man, Babysitters Club, and Raina Telegmeir are popular books, however wait lists for these titles are weeks, and months long. Finding appealing books for students to read in the meantime is a challenge and many choose to do without rather than trying to get through a book that was written before their parents were born. 

Supporting our students' literacy and encouraging them to explore literature is at the heart of all the educators in our school, and we know that with your help the students will find themselves and will see how truly wonderful the world of books is!
