This past year has been a challenge for everyone, including our school. A great deal of our local economy is based in agriculture and the energy industry. Given the downturn in the energy industry, we are seeing an upward trend in single parent/blended families, decreasing student populations, and transiency resulting in disrupted education patterns in our students. We have also had an increase in our newcomer population and while this helps to establish fantastic opportunities within our general and particularly our school community, it does come with challenges in the classroom. Continuous budget cuts to our education system have also contributed to the difficulty in providing support and resources for all students.
This school year in particular has been challenging for our students with the suspension of almost all extra-curricular activities. We have been trying to encourage and promote reading as an extra-curricular activity that can be enjoyed alone, but it has been difficult. Many are experiencing mental health challenges and we hope that the provision of new reading material may give a spark to their imaginations and an escape from a reality in a way that is healthy and educational beneficial.
