Kapapamahchakwew - Wandering Spirit School

Adopted by: Indigo Bay and Bloor & Coles Beaches

We have a need. A need for a new library. A need for new books in that library. A need for books that reflect our diverse student population in that library. It was a need, not a want, that led us to apply to the Indigo Adopt a School Program this year.

For many years, Indigenous people were discriminated against, dismissed, ignored, beaten and denied the right to be persons. First Nations, Metis and Inuit people in Canada have had a bloodied history. Our school was founded in the mid-1970s, by Elders Pauline Shirt and Vern Harper in their home to provide a safe and nurturing environment for Indigenous youth in Toronto. Perseverance, patience and pride have continued since then at Wandering Spirit to provide for our youth today.

Finally, in early, 2017, Kapapamahchakwew - Wandering Spirit School, the First Nations School of Toronto moved to the former building of Eastern Commerce Collegiate Institute, our new permanent home. It is only now, four years later, that we have begun the transformation of the Library Learning Commons into a space that is relevant and current for our students. A space that is welcoming to the Indigenous community and the intersectionality of our students. A place where traditional teachings of Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) and cultural perspective, values, spirituality and language can be practiced. We need our students to feel proud to be Indigenous, and we need our students to read good things about their ancestors who have contributed good things to our lives.

At Kapapamahchakwew, our students learn about the ways of their ancestors by being engaged, not only intellectually but also spiritually, and emotionally on a daily basis. Daily smudging clears our thoughts so we can all learn in a good way. Our everyday lessons integrate Anishinaabe teachings, with traditional drumming, singing, and storytelling; the Ojibwe language and culture is taught to every student from Kindergarten to Grade 8. Every Friday, we celebrate with our traditional ceremonial Big Circle. The Wandering Spirit Big Circle is our community circle, where we share traditional music, creation stories, thoughts and points of wisdom from our Elders. It is a chance for students and staff to share good things.

Although the students immerse themselves in traditional ways and language every day at school, what they are missing is vast and critical. They are missing books that explain their history, books that show them new and expansive fictional worlds, and books on their favourite subjects, like the Leafs and the Raptors. Our students need to see literacy beyond the text in math books, beyond the geographic formations of the Canadian Shield. Our students need books for literacy for pleasure, and for that the supply is limited. Our school literacy programs, and the students’ literacy needs, are in dire need of verbally rich text and graphics to engage them and catapult them into the world beyond.

As we say while smudging, to think good thoughts, to see good things, to hear good things, to say good things, to feel good things and to walk in a good way. This is what we want for all of our students. This is why we are reaching out on behalf of our students to Indigo. We need our library for our students, to go in a good way, and we know a partnership with Indigo will do good things for all of us.
