Eastview Public School - Scarborough, Ontario

Eastview Public School

Adopted by: Chapters Woodbridge & Indigo Hillcrest

We are a beautiful Indigenous School in the Galloway and Kingston Road area. We are #18 on the TDSB's Learning Opportunities Index that signifies external challenges affecting student success, with #1 being the most underserved out of 462 schools. We are also a Model School for Inner Cities Initiative due to the level of need in the community. We have a 40% Indigenous population and Indigenous students from all over the city can be bussed to our school for the opportunity to learn their culture and language. We have high levels of trauma within our community and we try to educate from a trauma-informed lens. Many of our students are suffering from intergenerational trauma due to Native Residential Schools. Our student engagement is extremely low and the Adopt-a-School program would be a huge benefit to our students to provide materials that represent them and their experiences and books that focus on social-emotional literacy. They need to see themselves in the books available to them in the school. 70% of our Grade 3 students are below the provincial average in literacy and your program would allow us to rebuild confidence and student success. Our parent literacy levels are also quite low so being able to use high interest, low reading level texts to assist parents in home reading programs would be of great benefit to us. Although we have significant need in our school we do not receive additional funding that will both support the social-emotional needs of our students, as well as being culturally responsive and relevant to our diverse population. We are not able to participate in fundraising due to community financial limitations and our parent council is unable to raise funds. That being said, are students are eager to learn and love new experiences and opportunities. Our staff are extremely experienced and full of enthusiasm and love. At Eastview we are a family where we try to make our students feel safe and cared for. Overall, the Adopt-a-School program is the final piece of the puzzle in trying to rebuild the relationship between our community and literacy.
