Our school is in a rapidly developing urban setting and each year we welcome more and more students. As a result, our school community is incredibly diverse and our goal is to ensure that students, their families, culture, and traditions are reflected in the books they read. Books should be mirrors and windows for children. They want to see themselves in the books they read. Furthermore, a diverse collection of books would foster perspective-taking, understanding and inclusion in our school community. Additionally, a recent survey of Intermediate students about their reading interests indicated that they would like many more graphic novels and manga books in our library and this will foster a love of reading amongst our older students. These formats will also engage reluctant readers and English Language Learners.
